Winter at the Lakeside Lair

Just got in a little while ago and thought I'd take a stroll down to the beach to watch the sunset. This is virtually the same shot as the one that I use in my blog title. Sure looks different in winter eh? Just as pretty though.

This is looking just to the right of this breakwall. I thought these ice floes looked neat.

Here's a view of the Fermi nuclear plant. On a clear day you can also see another nuclear plant across the lake in Ohio.

I've always told my children that when I go, I want to go fast. When my son saw how close we were to the nuclear plant he said, "Mom, all you'll see is a big white flash".

And here's the sunset near the mouth of the Detroit river.

Sorry, caught a misspelling and there's no way to edit a comment (blush).

A beautiful and inspirational place to live and write; I wish there weren't power plants so close, and worry immensely about nuclear energy and it's repercussions, but the "coal fireds" have their immediate drawbacks as well (mercury, etc.).

With the beauty around you, and the beauty within you, it's no wonder I'm becoming addicted to your posts! A voice of reason in the wilds of modern life, you are a treasure!

Well, Alan, I had to zoom in as much as I could with my little camera to get the shot of Fermi 2. I too worry about nuclear energy especially since here in Ontario the government has vowed to cut down on the coal fired plants and reopen the nuclear ones.

Sometimes I wonder why they just can't put more money in alternatives such as wind, solar and hydro. A friend of mine has a geothermal heating system in his house and it's a pretty cool contraption. I wish I had the money and land mass to install one in my home.

In a populated area, geothermal should be a public utility, but that would be like trying to get public transportation back; the politicos aren't going to spend the money to do it, or even discuss it. That an energy tax on current sources could fund it would be beyond their vision.

Years ago I read that the public transport systems in Europe were funded by taxes on fuel, but that same lack of vision for the future has stymied efforts for anything along those lines here. Had Eisenhower not made the interstate highway system a priority for "national defense" it would have never gotten off the ground either!

Gee, Alan, I didn't know that Ike pulled the "National Defense" card to get the interstates built. It makes sense though that it would work since there was such a "better dead than red" mentality going around back then.

Hmm, where would we be today if it hadn't been for the Russian threat? Maybe Canada would have got the Arvo Arrow instead of a bunch of used ISBMs?

Anyway, I can't think of a better excuse than national security to heavily invest in alternative energy sources and technologies. But, like you said, there is such an astounding lack of vision.
